Islam & Sufism
with Kemal Korucu

Saturday, October 23, 2021
11:00 am - 5:00 pm Eastern Daylight Time

In Person and also streaming online via ZG Zoom
$75 Non-member, $60 ZG member

The workshop will be recorded, registrants will have access to the recording after the event.

Our charismatic teacher, Kemal Korucu invites you to join in person for a day of learning, poetry, guided practice, and reflection on spiritual questions.

ZG will provide a covid-safe space (Bring your vaccination card, proper social distancing, with masks required) for a small number of participants to hear Kemal in a more connecting environment. We will also be streaming the event via ZG Zoom, so you have the option of participating remotely, or watching the video later. You must be registered in advance!

Kemal will provide an introduction to basic tenets of Islam, the fundamentals of Sufism, and walk us through a practice from the rich tradition of Islamic mysticism.  Tasawwuf is an Arabic term literally meaning “to become a Sufi”. In this class we will study classical & modern interpretations of Tasawwuf as the spiritual dimension of Islam.  If you've read the entrancing poetry of Rumi or Hafiz, you'll love learning more about the rich and beautiful tradition that creates such effusive adoration for the Divine and one another.

The agenda will cover...

  • Basic beliefs and practices of Muslims as well as investigating Sufi answers to universal questions like —  Who am I? Who is God? Why am I here? What is my purpose?
  • We will be using scholarly works of contemporary scholars like Fethullah Gulen and Said Nursi as well as classical sources from Imam Al Ghazali and of course Rumi.
  • Diversity of the people and groups who identify as “Sufi” makes our investigation a challenge but hopefully we will learn and have fun at the same time as we dive into this deep ocean called Tasawwuf.

Kemal discusses the workshop with the other presenters on The Spirit of Now podcast!

Kemal describes himself as, "A forgetful servant who struggles daily to stay on a path that he hopes will take him to God’s mercy."

A lifelong Sufi, Kemal Korucu was born in Turkey and came to the United States as a teenager. He received a BS in Computer Science from Georgia State University and started a software development company where he still serves as its President. Kemal has served on the boards of several non-profit organizations in Georgia, including Istanbul Center & Atlantic Institute, where he currently serves as its Vice President. Kemal volunteers for interfaith dialogue activities whenever possible, and lives with his family in the North Fulton area.
