Theology and religious institutions often seem to separate us — but spirituality and mysticism invite us to find our deep union in the Divine and in one another. With this principle in mind, Contemplation and Practice invites us into a seven week journey of learning about the mystical traditions found in the world's great spiritual paths — with a focus on contemplative exercises that can help us embody that mystical union in our own hearts and minds. From the western traditions of Sufism, Kabbalah, and Christian mysticism, to eastern traditions such as Vedanta or Zen, we will celebrate both the cultural diversity and the profound contemplative unity that holds world mysticism together. Each week we will explore a topic related to one or more of the great mystical traditions, followed by a contemplative exercise that you can weave into your daily practice. Nobody becomes a "master" in just seven weeks, but hopefully we will all be nurtured and nourished as we drink from the many wells that tap into the One River of Divine Felicity and Beatitude.

Our course facilitator is internationally recognized, Carl McColman, a commissioned Centering Prayer teacher, a life-professed lay associate of the Trappist monks, and the author of books like The Big Book of Christian Mysticism, and An Invitation to Celtic Wisdom. While Carl's own practice is steeped in Christian contemplation, he has been active in the interfaith community for many years and has taught world mysticism courses through Emory Continuing Education and the Neshama Interfaith Center. Carl is thrilled to be bringing his love for interspiritual/world mysticism to Zeitgeist and we hope this is the first of many opportunities for us to explore together. Learn more about Carl here and listen to his podcast Encountering Silence.

Class will meet online via ZG Zoom, every Monday night at 7:00, from Monday, September 28 - Monday, November 9, 2020. Your teacher Carl has formatted the curriculum around the online environment, so we'll have lots of engagement and interaction. We'll also create a Facebook group for continuous interaction between class sessions. Here's what we'll be learning and practicing (each class session will include instruction and practice of the contemplative ways of each tradition):
